That's because I'm in the process of rounding up some very talented actors and comedians from around New Jersey and am producing a show tentatively called "Garden State Variety." You can like us on Facebook by <a href="http://www.facebook.com/GardenStateVarietyShow">clicking this link</a>. In Lambertville, <a href="http://www.greenbirdievideo.com/">Green Birdie Studios</a>, has graciously agreed to host us and we'll be taping two pilot episodes "live" with an audience in mid-May. </span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;font-size:130%;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;font-size:130%;"><i>The goal is to get sponsors for the show</i> and if that happens: <b>We do a live show every other Friday night</b>. It's been my dream to do something like this since I first watched Uncle Floyd and the Channel 9 Howard Stern shows. </span><div><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ9dlXyZZMVDQNZYDYHuTFblR-QG9XkCdLVDoC6Lji7FhMNEbFy8HEp4lCwyxgOkx3VIQJa1I_16jw-g3Fm0AMISFEsssnhPJHVCi7h_SoSkkAto5fbEJY3DhIsZmUmGEg6w7ZPLMxgvY/s1600/sue.png" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 112px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ9dlXyZZMVDQNZYDYHuTFblR-QG9XkCdLVDoC6Lji7FhMNEbFy8HEp4lCwyxgOkx3VIQJa1I_16jw-g3Fm0AMISFEsssnhPJHVCi7h_SoSkkAto5fbEJY3DhIsZmUmGEg6w7ZPLMxgvY/s200/sue.png" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732933387247359586" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;font-size:130%;">The first pilot episode will be about "stereotypes" where we will tackle many of the NJ reality TV shows. It's a walkable town, where I can park my car for the weekend and never move it. There is an assortment of great restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries. <div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">It's got the old time charm with antique shops, cool historic houses and a hopping <a href="http://www.buckslocalnews.com/articles/2011/10/01/new_hope_gazette/news/doc4e864732ce2ee185653208.txt">Halloweenville</a>. </div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe width="460" height="300" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/i_85YSAE78o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">It's far enough <b>north</b> of Trenton to not be included in many people's dividing line, but far enough <b>west</b> to provoke debate.</div><div><br /></div><div>But there is one thing I haven't gotten used to here and in the surrounding areas: </div><div><br /></div><div><b>The time it takes to make a breakfast or lunch sandwich.</b></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9yV5M8QH6VytBPah3OW0V5Gow8OjolpOF6NRTjCb5D5QQvXUoPcy6CKnYFsn7TLnh024Yt_2ILEh6OzkR49iKw0vZQtYCoVnDs1GQhx55t825TVF2wcZEwS4OeK7osDfDwZTgT2PEWjk/s1600/n10777427838_608256_2070.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 216px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9yV5M8QH6VytBPah3OW0V5Gow8OjolpOF6NRTjCb5D5QQvXUoPcy6CKnYFsn7TLnh024Yt_2ILEh6OzkR49iKw0vZQtYCoVnDs1GQhx55t825TVF2wcZEwS4OeK7osDfDwZTgT2PEWjk/s320/n10777427838_608256_2070.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5658994422503601282" /></a><br /></div><div>After living in North Jersey for 6 years, I have become preconditioned, and may never be able to go back.</div><div><br /></div><div>In Hoboken, every morning I got coffee and a sandwich at <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/jps-bagel-express-hoboken">JP's Bagel Express</a> and was in and out in a flash. In Maplewood, it was <a href="http://www.maplewoodonline.com/bagel/">Bagel Chateau</a>. I grabbed some grub and had just enough time to talk to the local fixtures about the NFL scores, trades and predictions for the week.</div><div><br /></div><div>For lunch, I've been pampered by <a href="http://www.millburndeli.com/">Millburn Deli</a>. It's the most unbelievable delicatessen I've ever been to in my life. During busy times, you take a number and are still served quickly. Order a Gobbler and you'll be greeted like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Peterson">Norm from Cheers</a>. Or go on Thursday where the staff are wearing wacky hats.</div><div><br /></div><div>During my South Jersey days, I never got a deli sandwich so fast. One exception was the <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/white-house-sub-shop-atlantic-city-2">White House Sub Shop</a>, but that is a tourist fixture and caters to a busy lunch crowd. So it's true, staffing size and proximity to a city matter. They can cross geographic or imaginary boundaries. </div><div><br /></div><div>However, the slow and sometimes excruciating wait times around here got me speculating. One of the biggest things people told me in <a href="http://www.newjerseythemovie.com/New_Jersey_The_Movie/Home.html">New Jersey: the Movie</a> interviews was that South Jersey was slower than North Jersey. However, many could never elaborate on what that meant. </div><div><br /></div><div><b>Could it have been service time at delis?</b></div><div><br /></div><div>Go ahead try it. Get a stopwatch and time your deli during a lunch or breakfast rush. <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/nsjersey">Tweet it to me</a> or post a comment here. Will we see a pattern?</div><div><br /></div><div>As someone who is on the cusp on the Internet/ texting/ instant gratification generation, this may matter to many businesses bottom lines in the future . . . </div><div><br /></div><div> </div>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09264995990074983086noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5892658580022477068.post-62658218417560837412011-08-30T15:10:00.036-04:002011-09-01T17:00:39.361-04:00Making 9/11 AND Irene more than just teachable moments<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFzYAr2RpAWxuSsmSqjMRlHXenscClFOLIwH3vniQhz-axqrRgcAy8yfxOPZZ_DuWbkAeXQtLdREj1ileVvqqwjnGXeZdRGX6mFxSMbN2sBTFzfNe_rrYjv3RPo9R8vfMcZBHGCMYkp2c/s1600/Poindexter.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFzYAr2RpAWxuSsmSqjMRlHXenscClFOLIwH3vniQhz-axqrRgcAy8yfxOPZZ_DuWbkAeXQtLdREj1ileVvqqwjnGXeZdRGX6mFxSMbN2sBTFzfNe_rrYjv3RPo9R8vfMcZBHGCMYkp2c/s320/Poindexter.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5647142198785684002" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">There is a scene in<span style="font-style: italic; "> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw6zrInbtQE">Revenge of the Nerds</a></span> where Poindexter and a member of the Omega Mu sorority are are on a couch at a frat party and, dazed, he speaks an awkward pickup line: "<span style="font-style: italic; ">Would you rather live in the ascendency of a civilization or during its decline</span>?" If you've seen the movie, you know what her very blunt change-of-the-subject response was. </span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">
<br />
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">But in the wake of Irene and on the verge of commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I can't help to feel that we've had it <span style="font-style: italic; ">both</span> ways. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">For me, the 80s were a time for optimism. Rocky beat Drago, Molly Ringwald got Jake and those NERDS defeated the menacing Alpha Betas. The Internet became ubiquitous and it was an all night economic party. Then on 9/11, a network of terrorists spend some thousands of dollars which <a href="http://www.iags.org/costof911.html">led us to spend billions</a> (right or wrong). Thinking of the money they put into the attack and the money we spent as a result, that's a pretty big payoff on an evil investment.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Then came Katrina (where the <a href="http://fox.presidencia.gob.mx/en/activities/speeches/?contenido=20654&pagina=1">Mexican army had to assist us</a>), then the housing bubble burst. Even though the <a href="http://www.npr.org/2011/08/29/140038987/northeast-starts-to-add-up-irenes-economic-blow">economic impact of Hurricane Irene</a> is still being measured, it has cost many in New Jersey property damages, slowed businesses productivity, transit and crippled some roads. Then there's the three ever looming rain clouds: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. It's enough to make me want to click to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZA6mvMXxBQ">Rocky IV</a> and temporarily insulate myself . . . now that we have electricity.</span></div><div style="text-align: right;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;font-size:78%;"></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;">
<br />True, what I wrote above could be construed as hyperbole or dementia. But I still often feel our society is surrounded by <b>Brawn and Beauty</b>, but the <i>brains</i> have become lower cased (and only italicized). Maybe it's because I found out</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KzGfuFFSxA">Rocky was really on steroids</a> and the <a href="http://www.iousathemovie.com/">deficit really grew throughout the supposed productive 80s.</a> Or maybe it's because I think the economic downturn will see a continued crumbling of our infrastructure: roads, rail, water, waste, etc. With no money to spend to improve it all, sooner than later, Mike Judge might have already <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiocracy">predicted our future</a>. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">But what if we could have insulated our state from some of Irene's effects? What if we were less vulnerable to a weather related disruption, terror attack or <strike>zombie invasion</strike></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">?</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;">
<br />Author<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Robb_(military_theorist)"> John Robb</a> is a military theorist</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;"> who pioneered a concept known as <b>resilient communities</b></span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;">. These are simply defined as neighborhoods were you could <a href="http://globalguerrillas.typepad.com/globalguerrillas/2008/01/the-resilient-c.html">survive an extended disconnection from the grid</a> in:
<br />
<br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;"><b>Energy</b> - Blocks with solar panels or other energy connected to large town batteries or decentralized grids</span></span></div><div></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"><b>Food </b>- Community food, farms & fisheries</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"><b>Communication </b>- Public or emergency cell phones, land lines, social networking, charging stations</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"><b>Transportation </b>- Community ATVs, duck boats or even . . . <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ih_KBru6Co">hovercrafts</a>.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">The above examples are just my own thoughts, but the list potential goes on. The goal is to have most normalcies of daily life continue, even if something big and bad happens. It wasn't going to stop Hurricane Irene, but it could have drastically lessened its aftermath. If MLB ballparks can create <a href="http://www.ads-pipe.com/en/article.asp?articleID=20">playing fields that drain rain water in record time</a>, then why can't our country, state or municipality do something similar? Oh, then we get to "It's the government" and the taxes arguments, but could it be done in a cost efficient manner?</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Robb has already written a book on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Brave-New-War-Terrorism-Globalization/dp/0471780790">what the future might look like</a> and is now working on a book about the future of peace and <a href="http://www.psfk.com/2011/01/open-source-google-street-view-map.html">Picture This</a>. It's open sourced and he's hoping people's creativity shine through on a small scale, which eventually will translate to big.</span></div>

We don't want to go that route again.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Those issues aside, Robb's thinking coupled with events of the past decade do call for a new curriculum. New Jersey has been very innovative and actually just authored a <a href="http://www.state.nj.us/education/holocaust/911/k12curr.pdf">9/11 curriculum</a> (or go <a href="http://www.wnyc.org/shows/bl/2011/aug/30/teaching-911/">HERE</a> if you want the Cliffs Notes). </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">But what about a curriculum that prepares our youth for the many diverse systems disruptions that come along more often? <b>Like Hurricane Irene </b>or other weather or power-related maladies? <br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">-More scholarships for the talented who promise to return and live in their hometowns.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"><b>Of course there are drawbacks: </b></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Privacy & safety issues</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Permission slips would abound</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Workers resenting the kids</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">It could be called slave labor</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Residents and employees would have to volunteer</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Transportation: School buses & fuel are costly & block a lot of great ideas</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Their new knowledge & skills would have to be coupled with ethics</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Preparing for disasters could make our youth paranoid or militaristic</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">We could even hypnotize our kids to become overly addicted to consumer spending: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4Ng2P3zxfM">hello Morgan Spurlock</a>!</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">But since NJ has a new 9/11 Curriculum, it's also time for a <b>Resilient Community curriculum</b>. A lot of cool similar science related competitions exist throughout our state, but they're mostly independent and all over the place. With a recession, college so expensive and student debt mounting, we're going to have to make education to our secondary kids much more innovative and accessbile. It doesn't take a computer (though that would be nice). But communities across New Jersey need to start realizing it may be necessary to their budgets and bottom line. Some knowledgeable, skilled local citizens could save a municipality thousands of dollars.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Maybe you think it's socialism, a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibbutz">kibbutz</a> or like the <a href="http://www.dancingrabbit.org/">crunchy granolas</a> (I say that lovingly). </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">But it's much more like combining:</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">John Robb with </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyG-hjRE3i8">Ed Begley, Jr.</a> from "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_With_Ed">Living with Ed</a>" and making it every person's knowledge or at least a common broad knowledge. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">For instance, every kid should have a map and try to memorize every street of their town. In my current town of residence, I was told <i>only one</i> EMS volunteer knew every street name and which grid affected it. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">In middle school, my dad gave me a street map of my town.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJluF3aDy__UhEO38iPPzWnnm_pU1TrCMWGGTNaIVql9CRT4gAcpzPLtQ_KPFqfLLnm1FT0ToZQYcWOilX3K2RhffPyjpejYefJRCz3GPYj5HKQkNOUerrIfX3hszSVjPm8TuR1eYIvNg/s1600/Census_Bureau_map_of_Ewing_Township%252C_New_Jersey.gif" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 237px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJluF3aDy__UhEO38iPPzWnnm_pU1TrCMWGGTNaIVql9CRT4gAcpzPLtQ_KPFqfLLnm1FT0ToZQYcWOilX3K2RhffPyjpejYefJRCz3GPYj5HKQkNOUerrIfX3hszSVjPm8TuR1eYIvNg/s320/Census_Bureau_map_of_Ewing_Township%252C_New_Jersey.gif" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5647162022277861970" /></a></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">I used to draw on it. In my room. For fun.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">When I got a driver's license, I took it with me and drove Ewing Township's entire borders. I guess I eventually <a href="http://www.newjerseythemovie.com/New_Jersey_The_Movie/Home.html">became obsessed with borders</a>. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Jokes aside about my boring childhood, every classroom kid should have a map of their town. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Many residents here couldn't get to work on Monday because of road closures, and their GPSes were going nutty. But I could get to the <a href="http://www.firkintavern.com/">Firkin Tavern</a> (where they had power and free wifi) because of backroads and a map. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Sorry if this is too autobiographical, but point is: <i>it doesn't take much</i>. If you live at the Shore, it could be: <b>Dunes, Drainage & Decentralizing</b>. Classes could be hammering boardwalks back in after school and <a href="http://marketplace.publicradio.org/display/web/2009/03/04/pm_boardwalk/">knowing where they come from</a>. It could be sponsored by the school, city hall or both. Oh, but then you'd have to sacrifice some athletics . . . . ouch.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">Bottom line: </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"><b>A curious kid is an awesome thing.</b></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;"></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Maybe the problem with our country's schools isn't the administrators, teachers, governors or standards, maybe it's the <i>disconnect between the municipality and the school itself</i>. In 13 years of teaching (yes I teach), I've been to my district's City Hall twice and once was to get out of a parking ticket. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:georgia;">Maybe I need to look myself in the mirror. Teachers do this every September. But as we cleanup from Irene and prepare to commemorate 9/11, maybe New Jersey and America need to take a longer look in the mirror as well.</span></div><div></div><div></div><div></div>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09264995990074983086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5892658580022477068.post-15465003236458002582011-08-18T17:48:00.002-04:002011-08-18T17:52:01.737-04:00Google Maps view of New Jersey: the Movie locationsHere is the map of the locations in the final movie cut. It appears NJ's time on stage has not yet expired. </span><p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">But what if there are more chapters in the Jersey reality storyboard still unread that could leave a different kind of legacy to the world?</span></p> <p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">So television executives looking for that next big hit, I present to you a list of five reality TV shows that would broaden the narrow spotlight on us, while preserving the Jersey Shore as the centerpiece of action. If produced correctly, some serious ratings gold might be achieved. </span></p> <p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><strong>1. The Other Side of Jersey Shore</strong></span></p><p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhgFVLy5zPfoHYfAYfU_s6rnSkRLhV0wV8wPYIRJ3qFmzaZWn9cHdp24pBxRxeK9iU8yFEiYGJ2oypeg54WJhfcZcsDB2i294Wgh6eNZsdc-i7Pz7VQRjRuibUMSZTPVWlIaYgmVewuOM/s1600/BennyGoHome.png"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 202px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhgFVLy5zPfoHYfAYfU_s6rnSkRLhV0wV8wPYIRJ3qFmzaZWn9cHdp24pBxRxeK9iU8yFEiYGJ2oypeg54WJhfcZcsDB2i294Wgh6eNZsdc-i7Pz7VQRjRuibUMSZTPVWlIaYgmVewuOM/s320/BennyGoHome.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641104341568152066" border="0" /></a></span></p><p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">PBS does a great documentary series entitled, <a href="http://www.pbs.org/pov/">POV</a>, showing viewers controversial issues from different sides. This variation would examine the locals who have weathered rowdy crowds similar to the Jersey Shore cast for years, in this case, let's focus on the people at <a href="http://bennygohome.com/">Benny Go Home</a>. Put cameras on this loose alliance of locals and: </span></p> <p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><em>Follow their struggles with tourists littering, swelling traffic and the bad behavior we're already used to seeing on TV. They roll their eyes as the police come to break up another boardwalk brawl. They campaign against eminent domain and support independent businesses. They throw a huge party after Labor Day celebrating the end of the tourist season.</em></span> You may disagree with their philosophy: but I dare you to find one group that bleeds Jersey Pride more.</p><span style="font-family: arial;font-size:100%;"><strong>Likely Channels: </strong>PBS, the CW or WB <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Q9WHjYTZtTyLViIXwLnbwulPTW8ZhqBUh_PorNIlFyVWZpgX1_BaWn_BIlftD7R74QiW5PXBms7wfzKY72Qklnm7tVqBpJWLslEIZ5_G_ZO-bN68f8014Y4LkDGk1ltd-Zr1m1DRYU4/s1600/JerseyShoreRollerGirls.png"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 155px; height: 115px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6Q9WHjYTZtTyLViIXwLnbwulPTW8ZhqBUh_PorNIlFyVWZpgX1_BaWn_BIlftD7R74QiW5PXBms7wfzKY72Qklnm7tVqBpJWLslEIZ5_G_ZO-bN68f8014Y4LkDGk1ltd-Zr1m1DRYU4/s320/JerseyShoreRollerGirls.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641104802654261346" border="0" /></a>

<br /><strong>Watchability: <u>9</u></strong> - BGH has a healthy relationship with the <a href="http://www.jerseyshorerollergirls.net/">Jersey Shore Roller Girls</a> out of Asbury Park. While the focus could shift from one group to the other, these two organizations often do events together and embrace the locals tag ferociously. Roller Girl matches would adrenalize any down times. Being set in and around Asbury Park, an added highlight would be the eclectic live music scene.

<br /><strong>2. Ice Water Surfers</strong>

<br />I've written about <a href="http://www.nj.com/shore/blogs/index.ssf/2011/08/charities_and_the_shore.html">New Jersey surfing legend Dean Randazzo before</a>, but it's also important to emphasize Alex DePhillipo's stunning documentary, <em> <a href="http://www.darkfallthemovie.com/">Dark Fall the movie</a></em> in which Randazzo and other Garden State surfers are featured. The film could easily be molded into a television format: <em>Follow around these nomadic amphibians during fall and winter. Tension builds every time they check the weather for reports of a Nor'Easter barreling our way. They brace for the news, like firefighters awaiting the call bell. </em></span><p style="font-family: arial;"> </p> <p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">In addition to seeing these protagonists brave the frigid temperatures of the North Atlantic, the show should also focus on the relationship surfers have with the environment. Many are already <a href="http://www.cleanoceanaction.org/index.php?id=153">stewards of the sea</a>. Learn a couple environmental tips while getting some hot coca and developing a deep respect for what these thrill seekers will do for a rush.</span></p><span style="font-family: arial;font-size:100%;"><strong>Likely Channels:</strong> National Geographic, Planet Green, The Weather Channel<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQgDd-7U4lliHJaGKSxWm2DRveWDVpU0DAG8ZO5uEvX2rRuI62-p1NmB42W0OpmYtctAOFJT3t_DN0leN3lag-xuHCZjTX0D-1bTkWqP9m2qRO7XrZ_IEwenXFaaDjIW2CQ1FjSt_RLnU/s1600/Hayley+Green.jpg"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 155px; height: 103px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQgDd-7U4lliHJaGKSxWm2DRveWDVpU0DAG8ZO5uEvX2rRuI62-p1NmB42W0OpmYtctAOFJT3t_DN0leN3lag-xuHCZjTX0D-1bTkWqP9m2qRO7XrZ_IEwenXFaaDjIW2CQ1FjSt_RLnU/s320/Hayley+Green.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641105886452493842" border="0" /></a>
<br /><strong>Hangout:</strong> The surfers would swap stories at the local Diner, where we could also introduce <strike>Taylor Ham</strike> Pork Roll to the world.
<br /><strong>Watchability: <u>8.5</u></strong> Surfers crave challenges. It could make the Jersey Shore a destination for every surfer: <em>You go to Costa Rica in the winter? That's cool; it's like the kiddie pool compared to getting slammed by unpredictable frozen winter waves</em>. Additionally, with Randazzo, DePhillipo and some other common Jersey surnames, it would doubly show that not every Italian American from our state is a member of the GTL crowd.

So why not further shatter that ceiling while showing that New Jersey is actually a very culturally diverse place? </span><p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Use the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/11898551@N03/sets/72157627431233112/">Diwakar Bollywood Dancers</a>: <em>They're young, they're hot, they're from New Jersey and they do more than fist pump. They practice by day and tear up Jersey Shore dance floors by night. </em> The guys came from breakdancing roots, the girls from classical and traditional styles. Some were born in India, most were born here. And then there's Alex, who refers to herself as, "the white girl." Founder of <a href="http://www.dancediwakar.com/company/index.php">Dance Diwakar</a>, Anil Diwakar, emigrated from India to New Jersey where he met and married an Italian American woman from Passaic County. <br /><strong>Hangout:</strong> During the day, they'd be at the Dance Studio or eating on <a href="http://www.oaktreeroad.us/">Oak Tree Road, USA</a>. They'd hit up the Jersey Shore clubs at night. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bollywood">Bollywood</a> dancing is <em>very</em> physical, so a nice twist would be to see if their athleticism could also translate to the beach volleyball courts.
<br /><strong>Watchability: <u>9.5</u></strong> It's true that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outsourced_%28TV_series%29">Outsourced</a>, failed on NBC just after one season, but this is about Indian <em>Americans</em> from <em>New Jersey</em>. This show has the versatility to include permanent judges. Maybe native Garden State son, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kal_Penn">Kal Penn</a>, makes a couple appearances? Or maybe, like Jersey Shore going to Italy, they travel to India and compete giving the show the strongest international flavor? I was impressed enough, I'm likely signing up for a winter class</span></p><p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><strong>4. These Jersey Shore lifeguard races are fiercely competitive and over one hundred years old (take that California). Stone Harbor captain, Sandy Bosacco, told me, "Many of these lifeguards are former division I and III athletes. It's intense." </span></p> <p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><em>Cameras document the initiations of freshmen lifeguards, the grueling training trials and feature the veteran lifeguards who compete in local, regional and national tournaments</em>. </span></p> <p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;">I'm betting <em>many</em> lifeguards find summer romance together; walks on the beach at sunrise would get our hearts racing.</span></p><p style="font-family: arial;"><span style="font-size:100%;"><strong>Likely Channels:</strong> Any ESPN Channel, The History Channel, Spike<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisl7wHr6mBEB2yQx2JBmFKzdFQVL4J4alHuIGRMO8BHB8eZPGCrhh6zKZJo3RzpJHAwR2GG7nT8006PeSWc3j1ACYFMH1yYM4meMkDRIBMP329h2q1yhkernPbnbI2aBz2foXrj0IJE5A/s1600/Stone+Harbor.jpg"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 155px; height: 116px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisl7wHr6mBEB2yQx2JBmFKzdFQVL4J4alHuIGRMO8BHB8eZPGCrhh6zKZJo3RzpJHAwR2GG7nT8006PeSWc3j1ACYFMH1yYM4meMkDRIBMP329h2q1yhkernPbnbI2aBz2foXrj0IJE5A/s320/Stone+Harbor.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641107366140068610" border="0" /></a>

From the sweat box sellers (it gets to about 110 degrees inside those little outhouses) to the men and women walking the beach checking to make sure everyone has paid their $8 to use the usually free sand and ocean. In an early episode, all hell breaks loose when someone accidentally writes the wrong water temperature on the chalk board and Sally over on 5th street runs out of singles before 10am!

They sometimes act as barriers and reinforce our beach patterns. But there is also evidence to the contrary: <p><em>We might be willing to endure longer and more unpleasant drives if we can be around our more familiar packs.</em></p> <p>Packs, as in wolves? Yep. We're pretty animalistic, ritualistic and even nostalgic on where we go to the Jersey Shore. We like to be with our familiar crowd, where we can visit the places from our youth. Even though many people have relocated in New Jersey, sometimes their beach preferences remain the same. That sometimes requires longer travel for the people in the geographic fringes of the state.</p> <p>Take my town of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lambertville,_New_Jersey">Lambertville</a>. It's north of Trenton and on the Delaware River. The closest beach is Belmar. So I did a survey of 100 people of all ages in town. The results are below:
<br /></p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq0nX_poGjqwDM0NSxeazlU6Cpd3KZwGFFuL7-_Cc45A2sR_XhsYQ5tU5VOHPspGReD6vI5Kjd0P4N2XNXnpn58ThZgtx3FmM7xT49Tn9evWttYMLmL4pBXL2NGn3tN0nN8Y3RHtc03to/s1600/lambertvilleshore.png"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 197px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq0nX_poGjqwDM0NSxeazlU6Cpd3KZwGFFuL7-_Cc45A2sR_XhsYQ5tU5VOHPspGReD6vI5Kjd0P4N2XNXnpn58ThZgtx3FmM7xT49Tn9evWttYMLmL4pBXL2NGn3tN0nN8Y3RHtc03to/s320/lambertvilleshore.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5639604137199103234" border="0" /></a><strong>*Asbury Park, Belmar and Atlantic City combine surrounding towns. Seaside Heights was combined with Island Beach State Park.</strong> </p><p>Belmar ruled with day trippers and younger people. Seaside had bigger numbers because many go to Island Beach State Park. LBI continues to be New Jersey's cultural North-South mixing bowl (<em>if you have a car - that post coming later</em>). But geographically speaking, Monmouth County beaches should dominate this list. However, the pattern showed that locals here are willing to drive farther to LBI and even south. For a town not in South Jersey, the representation of beaches south of Atlantic City is pretty remarkable. Maybe it's because Lambertville and many of the Hunterdon river towns are different in character than the rest of the county. They're tied to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucks_County,_Pennsylvania">Bucks County, PA</a> economically and culturally. Maybe it's because Monmouth County beaches are more year-round residential. But overall, I'm finding a good portion of New Jerseyans who will drive a longer distance just for familiarity. If you own a house or have colleagues or friends that do, it might lock you into your Shore town forever, no matter where you move to.</p><p>One guy at a lumber yard in town said, "I go farther because I don't want to sit next to Yankees<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGo7tF-nNG2TStjWVPr6rZQpCc5lIqSvagdtaJCUFiNhyzqq6qTYRIoSnsMKxWNtLQFGexFJsX0s-kYiDj1-6CelTB2FxE7U0v9sZ07OliRe1Zx5JxRwRzUck2TebPkJNole1g5rj6Oi0/s1600/lambertville.png"><img style="float: right; margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; cursor: pointer; width: 155px; height: 96px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGo7tF-nNG2TStjWVPr6rZQpCc5lIqSvagdtaJCUFiNhyzqq6qTYRIoSnsMKxWNtLQFGexFJsX0s-kYiDj1-6CelTB2FxE7U0v9sZ07OliRe1Zx5JxRwRzUck2TebPkJNole1g5rj6Oi0/s320/lambertville.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5639604486337120258" border="0" /></a> and Mets fans when I'm on vacation at the Shore." The people around nodded in agreement. Lynn Hetelson of Klines Court Antiques, who goes to Margate City told me, "I go where my friends are, where my family is. If I went to Point Pleasant Beach, I wouldn't know anyone." </p> <p>But it also depends on a day trip or a week. Lambertville resident Cindy Ege said, "When focusing on one day, it's a different choice than one week."</p><p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrNcXnkdDXfSMciKDmnJuUrU8_wRqZfR5Drba4cD_cTURraXCRXJuKZ8flRokFrMO0ZhzVb5FiMakHU1-U6C2ITIdJIUpJYbHEmLjVzn9F6XcnoMlLB1_rD4p5SK89N4Gy_uA3suHPtic/s1600/jerseyshore.jpg"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 155px; height: 293px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrNcXnkdDXfSMciKDmnJuUrU8_wRqZfR5Drba4cD_cTURraXCRXJuKZ8flRokFrMO0ZhzVb5FiMakHU1-U6C2ITIdJIUpJYbHEmLjVzn9F6XcnoMlLB1_rD4p5SK89N4Gy_uA3suHPtic/s320/jerseyshore.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5639604831775050050" border="0" /></a>But what about north, the upper Northwest of Jersey? To residents there, the day trip is not as attractive an option. To investigate, I called municipal offices in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milford,_New_Jersey">Milford, NJ</a> and was told: Seaside Heights, LBI, Ocean City and Wildwood Crest. No Point Pleasant Beach and <em>nothing</em> in Monmouth County, the shortest trek. Going to LBI almost adds a full hour onto the drive, compared with any Monmouth County spot. So it got me thinking:</p> <p><strong>Do you drive longer to go to the beach? Why?

Despite some freshly produced recent programming, <a href="http://blogs.app.com/capitolquickies/2011/06/06/christie-says-njn-will-end-be-run-by-wnet-in-new-york/">Governor Christie announced network's likely fate on Monday</a>.<div><br /></div><div>It's not unique to New Jersey; this is happening <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/23/business/media/23pbs.html">all over the country</a>. States are broke and cutting public television is a way to save some cash. <a href="http://www.nj.com/gloucester/voices/index.ssf/2011/06/njn_deal_looks_to_be_a_keeper.html">Some are cheering the move</a> because they believe the way <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/17/arts/television/17mcgr.html">public television operates is outmoded</a>. <a href="http://www.nj.com/gloucester/voices/index.ssf/2011/06/njn_deal_looks_to_be_a_keeper.html"> </a> They may be right.<br /><br />Unless the legislature vetoes it within a two-week period, after 43 years of programming, NJN is dead. The network will metamorphose into NJTV, produced by New York's WNET, or as many in North & "Central" Jersey know it, <a href="http://www.thirteen.org/">Channel Thirteen</a>. . . you know, that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyv905Q2omU">channel Billy Joel mentioned</a><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iyv905Q2omU"> under pressure</a>. </div><div><br /></div><div>The radio programming gets split North and South: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/07/business/media/07pbs.html">New York Public Radio gets four state owned licenses and Philly's WHYY gets five</a>. The radio side may actually be more profitable, hitting niche audiences with more relevance at a lower production cost.<br /></div><div><br /></div><div>So New Jersey is now left with two privately owned television networks: <a href="http://www.my9tv.com/">Channel 9 WWOR</a> in Secaucus (North) and <a href="http://www.nbc40.net/">NBC 40</a> (South) in the Atlantic City area. And in one way, NJN's demise can be linked to how those channels perform.<br /><br />Talk to people who live in those areas (I was on both sides for eight years). They're likely watching the New York or Philadelphia channels for news while passing over the more local option. Afterward, their remote controls stay <span style="font-style: italic;">out-of-state </span>for the sitcoms.<br /><br />Why is this? My guess is that people like to feel they're a part of something bigger. Maybe we think it somehow makes us more cultured, to be on a big city channel. That and they're more slickly produced.<br /><br />But the death of NJN brings up a bigger debate about our identity in the Garden State.<br /><br /><a href="http://nsjersey.blogspot.com/2008/04/i-want-to-go-to-beach.html">There <span style="font-style: italic;">is</span> something about Jersey Pride</a>. But many of us still form our identities around major metropolitan areas: North Jersey with New York, South Jersey with Philadelphia and the Shore people tend to <a href="http://www.bennygohome.com/">wrap their arms around the beach </a>and dread the mainland (or at least anything 5 miles west of them). The rest of us might find something else to rally around: the Boss, a diner or Rutgers football.<br /><br />But NJN never used its power to unite the Garden State in a way that spoke to the trendsetters, the people who don't just pass on culture, but create it. <span style="font-style: italic;"><br /><br />NJN never made us cool.</span><br /><br />Don't get me wrong, the network had some gems, including <a href="http://www.cumauriceriver.org/pages/dj-film.html">Down Jersey</a>, <a href="http://www.njn.net/television/njnseries/njfresh/">NJ Fresh</a> and other shows dedicated to tourism in the Garden State. One program last year showcased the Jersey Shore as an international tourist destination. It would have been great if that show got more publicity to counteract MTV's view.<br /><br />But would they have <a href="http://www.nj.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2011/06/kevin_smith_reality_show_may_l.html">broadcasted this</a>? Or shown this full-length movie?<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Tz8nQTyJMoI" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="240" width="370"></iframe><br /></div><br />I don't think so. Or how about <a href="http://www.newjerseythemovie.com/New_Jersey_The_Movie/Home.html">New Jersey: the Movie</a>? (<span style="font-style: italic;">clearing throat</span>) Yeah it is happening all over the country and it's all about funding. But if we all loved it, we would have fought harder for NJN.<br /><br />For instance, look at the success of NJ 101.5 FM. They have done an excellent job since their inception of Jersey centric-branding, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WKXW#New_Jersey-centric_branding">their call sign is just the tip of the iceberg</a>. The traffic reports make them relevant and their controversial broadcasting keeps people there. True it's private, and I often can't stand the hosts, but they're very successful.<br /><br />So New York will run a news incarnation of the old NJN with a reduced staff of only 15 - 20 people working on New Jersey issues. South Jersey will likely be ignored (preserving a historical trend).<br /><br />So what does the future hold for NJTV?<br /><br />Well, I have three suggestions:<br /><br />1) Find a cool NJ town and broadcast from there. (This <span style="font-style:italic;">can </span>be done)<br />2) Target the young and nerdy.<br />3) Embrace some of NJN's past, while evolving into the future.<br /><br />I will separately detail each point in later posts. But whether you loved NJN, hated it or didn't even know it existed, New Jersey lost some of its identity this week. Problem is, it's an identity that's always been hard to find.<br /><br /></div>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09264995990074983086noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5892658580022477068.post-54666662005512069502011-05-30T12:17:00.013-04:002011-05-30T22:47:52.429-04:00Besides the Shore: Where do you vacation?<a href="http://media.nj.com/ledgerupdates_impact/photo/turnpike-backupjpg-8925b42abc9a5ab4_large.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 432px; height: 287px;" src="http://media.nj.com/ledgerupdates_impact/photo/turnpike-backupjpg-8925b42abc9a5ab4_large.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal; "><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;">photo: NJ.com</span></b></span></b><div><div><b>Ahhh Memorial Day traffic.</b> When I traded my "<a href="http://nsjersey.blogspot.com/2008/08/bennys-vs-shoobies.html">shoobie</a>" moniker for "local" upon moving to the South Jersey Shore in 1999, I learned quickly to bulk up on supplies for big weekends and hope that I didn't have to get in the car - or God forbid - cross a bridge to go to the mainland during this time. <a href="http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/NJ-officials-expect-strong-summer-tourism-season-122801434.html">Early reports are that local tourists are flocking to the Jersey Shore</a> and predictions are that visits will be up throughout the summer . . . weather permitting<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:x-small;"><b><br /></b></span></div><div>Good news for the economy, but the report also got me waxing nostalgic. Since I moved from the Shore in 2005, I often miss that feeling of relaxation that makes so many pile in cars and brave the roads. But the traffic is intimidating. Despite <a href="http://articles.philly.com/2011-05-20/news/29564546_1_route-backroads-white-horse-pike">advice on back roads</a>, or leaving during different times, I usually I opt for day trips during the week now.<div><br />But yesterday, due west, away from the beach, my wife and I strolled around Lambertville, NJ and New Hope, PA (different states, symbiotic economies). And I noticed something: <i>The Jersey Shore vibe</i>. No guidos running around getting into fights . . . quite the opposite. Just a lot of relaxed people, escaping for the weekend, enjoying their days off. Very similar to my memories of the Shore. </div><div><br /></div><div>A month ago, I tried to capture my feelings on moving to Lambertville in a short video:</div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><iframe width="400" height="329" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/i_85YSAE78o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></div><div style="text-align: left;">As we had dinner at <a href="http://www.bellstavern.com/">Bell's Tavern in Lambertville</a> and drinks at <i>The Landing </i>in New Hope, I looked around and saw packed restaurants, lots of cargo shorts, flip flops and even some Hawaiian shirts. A lot of motorcycles. It was an overall sense of electricity in the air with a side of chill.</div><div><br /></div><div><i>Many</i> people in the area get away to the beach and enjoy the ocean. And some also come to the many NJ river towns: Lambertville, Stockton, Frenchtown & Milford to enjoy the scenery along this bucolic part of the Delaware River. It's a different vacation, and for many, a different vibe. But I had actually had many similar feelings last night as I did when I lived in Margate City. No beach, but the vacation relaxation vibe was apparent and intoxicating. Just more humid with no salt in the air.</div><div><br /></div><div>There are many other local non-shore relaxation spots. Let's not forget the many<a href="http://www.lkhopatcong.com/map.php"> lake towns</a> in Morris, Warren Passaic & Sussex. Some people also do the <a href="http://www.800poconos.com/">Poconos</a> in PA or<a href="http://www.visitlakegeorge.com/"> Lake George</a> area in NY.</div><div><br /></div><div>So I needed to ask the question: Besdies the Jersey Shore, what local spots do you visit to chill out in the summer? </div></div></div></div>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09264995990074983086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5892658580022477068.post-38535849616759056232011-04-11T19:55:00.013-04:002011-04-12T10:32:58.691-04:00The Battle for New Jersey's Soul<div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg64u1zHIKn2d4SNELFYR7IEoilJp1u_Vzub78VEMBSK8gBI-cGcvLGTuttvEX9ksZLo_qW5Fmz61S3Q8Gn6SO5QfXOaX9hjxdZCatViUnN_9qaNixY_EAOM-0_rvWGRlQxU0J5UP2HGpI/s1600/bayonne+bleeder.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 272px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594511594895843682" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg64u1zHIKn2d4SNELFYR7IEoilJp1u_Vzub78VEMBSK8gBI-cGcvLGTuttvEX9ksZLo_qW5Fmz61S3Q8Gn6SO5QfXOaX9hjxdZCatViUnN_9qaNixY_EAOM-0_rvWGRlQxU0J5UP2HGpI/s320/bayonne+bleeder.jpg" /></a>Look at Muhammad Ali hammering <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Wepner">Chuck Wepner</a> and you get an idea of what the media has done to New Jersey. The Bayonne Bleeder withstood a lot vs. Ali and even knocked the champ down during the fight, but for a more apt example, imagine if the media was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD44ZPFHLfg">Mike Tyson and New Jersey was Michael Spinks</a>. That quick knockdown is what it's been like for New Jerseyans to defend against the media onslaught over the past decade. </div><div><br /></div><div>The initial punches for this generation were <em>The Sopranos.</em> But it got a pass from many because it was fictional, well-written, <em>on HBO</em> and artsy, even though the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERYpbpqxf4o">opening credits </a>were jabs to the gut. Then came the uppercut to the jaw, MTV's <em>Jersey Shore</em>, followed by the roundhouses: <em>Real Housewives, Jerseylicious, & Jersey Couture</em>. Everyone across America was watching the fight and the world viewed via satellite TV. Even Iranian secret agents who tortured dissidents were enamored by what they saw as exciting - <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJXgR9UbmWU">fast forward to 42:25 to see.</a> </div><div><br /><div align="left">But now comes a new round in the larger heavyweight fight. If you were on vacation, Snooki from MTV's <em>Jersey Shore</em> made $32,000 speaking at Rutgers University recently. Here were some students' reactions:</div><div align="center"><br /><div style="WIDTH: 440px; BACKGROUND: #000000; HEIGHT: 272px"><embed height="272" name="Metacafe_6230054" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" width="440" src="http://www.metacafe.com/fplayer/6230054/snookis_rutgers_appearance_raises_eyebrows.swf" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="transparent" flashvars="playerVars=showStats=yesautoPlay=novideoTitle=Snooki's Rutgers Appearance Raises Eyebrows"></embed></div></div><div align="center"><div style="FONT-SIZE: 12px"><a href="http://www.metacafe.com/watch/6230054/snookis_rutgers_appearance_raises_eyebrows/">Snooki's Rutgers Appearance Raises Eyebrows</a></div><br /><div align="left">The story blew up because it was slightly more money than Noble & Pulitzer winning writer, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni_Morrison">Toni Morrison</a> will make at commencement. (Although according to nj.com, Snooki's fee was split some ways by related parties). Some initially feared that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSROlfR7WTo">Idiocracy was upon us</a>; others noted she was a cheaper alternative to many higher profile and more expensive acts. Writers may have hopped on this bandwagon because local stories dried up; some are tired of it already. But it's significant. It matters because a punch has been thrown back.</div><div align="left"><br /></div><div align="left">A <a href="https://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=190142874363013">facebook event has been posted </a>to counter Snooki's appearance and get <a href="http://www.nj.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2011/04/in_light_of_snooki_publicity_r.html">The Boss to return to Rutgers after a very long 30 plus year hiatus</a>. Additionally, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/update_security_info.php?wizard=1#!/group.php?gid=10199306005&v=info">a petition </a>(that lacks the political overtones) was started. </div><br /><div align="left"></div><div align="left">If Springsteen comes to Rutgers, it would be bigger than just vindicating the University's image post-Snooki and after the tragedy of Tyler Clementi. It could be a winning round on the scorecard of a losing fight. It matters because what's going on at Rutgers could be a microcosm of New Jersey's overall pulse. Social media is being used to galvanize the grassroots and counter the media who have for so long used us as their punching bag.</div><br /><div align="left"></div><div align="left">Maybe Bruce will come. Maybe he'll play and not be political about how this came about (unlikely for The Boss these days). </div><br /><div align="left"></div><div align="left">But let's not underscore this: <strong>timing is everything</strong>. </div><div align="left"><br /></div><div align="left">The New Jersey-themed reality shows are mostly petering out. Their 15 minutes are up. Even <em>Jersey Shore,</em> a show that has staying power and <a href="http://omg.yahoo.com/videos/omg-now-jersey-shore-cast-gets-a-six-figure-raise/13685">whose cast just got big bonuses</a>, is rumored to be ending after season 4. People will forget the shows, but the stereotypes will live on. A show by Bruce Springsteen on the campus of Rutgers would represent New Jersey fighting back, while these shows are still relevant to many.</div><div align="left"><br /></div><div align="left">Jersey guy Chuck Wepner went to round 15 with Muhammad Ali and became the inspiration for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky">Rocky</a>. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1yzIeBRh5o">We're calling for you Bruce</a>. In the film's extras, we interviewed a friend Doug, who grew up near <a href="http://www.belviderenj.com/">Belvidere</a> and both owners of <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/53/1125258/restaurant/North-Jersey/Gunnars-Landing-Belvidere">Gunnar's Landing</a>. Let me explain.</div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmaOVY4Y8aQt-IPFUEf6PqthBNXmQp0xUhL90jeolcU1GHLIRJ7RpfMxPAobHoaDHwYg5ALRQkSCtM3y3pFiQqhJA9p2gOEEtBd8fcwV3igYandO44ZvCYHKXh9eJ5ay58zEO4SxHZ6fc/s1600/NJ+style.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 182px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmaOVY4Y8aQt-IPFUEf6PqthBNXmQp0xUhL90jeolcU1GHLIRJ7RpfMxPAobHoaDHwYg5ALRQkSCtM3y3pFiQqhJA9p2gOEEtBd8fcwV3igYandO44ZvCYHKXh9eJ5ay58zEO4SxHZ6fc/s320/NJ+style.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5577404321816891602" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" border-collapse: collapse; line-height: 16px; -webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family:arial;font-size:13px;"><div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.2em; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline- color:initial;">1. <b>Bergen Posh</b> is in<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#FFCC00;"> <b>YELLOW </b></span>is all it's own. The people here emit a certain amount of confidence in themselves that you won't find anywhere else in the state. To most New Jerseyans, Bergen County is a different world, but ironically, it's dominated media depictions of us for so long. This is Real Housewives territory, but there is more to it than that. Not everyone has the stereotypical big Jersey hair here, but it definitely exists in large quantities. Being underdressed is not something I would advise on a weekend night. Style is very important and a reflection of your privileged status. You'll find hoop earrings, stilettos and BIG handbags. It's a populous place & pretty diverse; there is the <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=gtl">GTL</a> group, but also many golfers. I'm mostly referring to <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1298590844_4" style="line-height: 1.2em; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline- color:initial;">Northern Bergen County</span> and some parts of Passaic & Morris. This is more the prep school look, no hairspray. Major achievement goals for this LL Bean crowd would be to get into an Ivy or similar college, become an Abercrombie model or a professional equestrian. Many here work at pharmaceutical companies too. They know their wines and are well traveled. The <a href="http://www.farhillsrace.org/">Far Hills Steeplechase</a> would be the time to see this group's very style conscious mojo in action. Horse country continues into southeastern Mercer, Northern Ocean & Monmouth, but to a more laid back degree <span class="yiv1238152031Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 1.2em; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 0); ">(The green is shaded lighter here).</span></div><div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.2em; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline- color:initial;"><br /></div><div style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.2em; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline- color:initial;">3) <b>Gateway Urban</b> - <span class="yiv1238152031Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 1.2em; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; color:#FF0000;"><b>RED</b></span> From the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1298590844_8" style="line-height: 1.2em; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-width: 2px; border-bottom-color: rgb(54, 99, 136); cursor: pointer; ">Hazlet</span> & the Brunswicks to southern Bergen County, you're more likely to see makeup, & big hair. This area is close to where Jerseylicious is filmed. The GTL crowd exists in big numbers, but it's also where I think the best food in Jersey is because you have so many newer immigrants. You can go from a Korean BBQ to Indian to Dominican. It's really the best kept secret in all of NJ in my humble opinion. I don't know if you can link cuisine to style, but we have your urban NJ flavor here. Very confident, train-saavy people. I still stand by that. If you were to go to Bordentown High School, it would be pretty evident. However, because Routes <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_206">206</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_130">130</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_295_(Delaware_%E2%80%93_New_Jersey)">295</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_195_(New_Jersey)">195</a> and the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Turnpike">Turnpike</a> all intersect in or near Bordentown and because the town has three great sports pubs right next to each other, these establishments are often filled with many Mercer and Monmouth County people - which means more Giants fans. This was obvious at Dublin Square, where I counted 17 people in New York gear and only 4, including myself, in Philadelphia apparel. There were others there, including the Boston guy, but it gives you the atmosphere.</div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB-gPtSrbgM_KwoYnwJT-bfXWbnTU4w96gcKanCqUl3NNdk_6WbBhNC-HR8CKvxBC9TT5715eKtZLV1B4eiAAe0oN0072N5oLamrlvgNb3yWXfFsL1LiwMDEV7WxebP9VTWy5dM_z6Ges/s1600/IMG_0565.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB-gPtSrbgM_KwoYnwJT-bfXWbnTU4w96gcKanCqUl3NNdk_6WbBhNC-HR8CKvxBC9TT5715eKtZLV1B4eiAAe0oN0072N5oLamrlvgNb3yWXfFsL1LiwMDEV7WxebP9VTWy5dM_z6Ges/s320/IMG_0565.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552755117676211218" /></a>We then trekked to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ewing_Township,_New_Jersey">Ewing</a> in Mercer County, which was 6 - 4 Eagles in terms of apparel. But most of the people were Eagles fans. When the Giants scored to finish out the first half, only those four people (pictured) cheered. It was like a funeral in the bar and was a completely different atmosphere from Bordentown. Even though Ewing is further north, it is kind of isolated along the Delaware River if you look at the roads. All you've really got is the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_95_in_New_Jersey#Trenton_segment">Interstate 95's infamous gap</a> to PA and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_Route_29">Route 29</a> to Trenton and Lambertville. The Firkin was an Eagles bar. The four Giants fans also looked like TCNJ students.</div><div><br /></div><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Mcne-dpxmumIyv5IBxtmfB_ANGCrPj49Ru9NoodugfiiEGlmqaif_qec-NyfZgQMbVq5Z-r-crzG8b2kbKUFcnRbWWY6is4d3Im9iNwDuu5AVyKBF5b5Lp9GvnB-zo5O0x-_qz4rASY/s1600/IMG_0567.JPG"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7Mcne-dpxmumIyv5IBxtmfB_ANGCrPj49Ru9NoodugfiiEGlmqaif_qec-NyfZgQMbVq5Z-r-crzG8b2kbKUFcnRbWWY6is4d3Im9iNwDuu5AVyKBF5b5Lp9GvnB-zo5O0x-_qz4rASY/s320/IMG_0567.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552758504712904114" /></a>We finished by going 95 South through PA and hitting up <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgewater_Park_Township,_New_Jersey">Edgewater Park</a>. This was safely Eagles country. There were two loud Giants fans at the bar and that was it. I got some locals to pose for a picture, but this was before the big comeback. They reluctantly agreed, but by the end of the game, we are all hugging and high-fiving each other. It was quite a sight. It was quite a game. </div><div>It was quite a fun travel day through the sports dividing line of New Jersey.</div>Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09264995990074983086noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5892658580022477068.post-4637996665741258702010-12-17T12:00:00.011-05:002010-12-17T12:37:09.489-05:00Battle of the Bulges: Wawa line moves farther northThe opening of Wawa <a href="http://www.nj.com/news/local/index.ssf/2010/06/wawas_parsippany_store_will_be.html">in Parsippany - Troy Hills</a> this winter makes it Wawa's northernmost New Jersey location. New Jersey. Outdoors.<br /><br />It is something that we rarely picture. But could it happen here?<br /><br />Possibly.<br /><br />On Sunday, Paul Bruno of NJ.com thought out loud about<br /><a href="http://www.nj.com/hssports/blog/boysicehockey/index.ssf/2010/12/nj_field_hockey_blog_jersey_winter_classic.html">holding a high shool <strong>outdoor</strong> ice hockey event in the Garden State</a>.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.alliancehockey.org/SA%201-17-05%20Pond_hockey%20800x600.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 452px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 322px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.alliancehockey.org/SA%201-17-05%20Pond_hockey%20800x600.jpg" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;"> <strong>Alliance Hockey photo</strong><br /></span>It is a rare occurence that allows me to write about two of my passions in the same post. As a kid, I skated on a branch of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assunpink_Creek">Assunpink Creek </a>that went through my parents' property. It rarely freezes over anymore, but in North Jersey, especially the <a href="http://www.njskylands.com/">Skylands</a>, they get to <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/08/nyregion/long-island/08Rice.html">lace up skates outdoors </a>quite often. Even parts of the award-winning documentary, <a href="http://www.pondhockeymovie.com/">Pond Hockey</a>, were filmed farther east - in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bergen_County">Bergen County</a>.<br /><br />But where in the state could a game like this occur? </p><p>The coldest place in New Jersey of course - <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sussex_County,_New_Jersey">Sussex County</a>. And they have two potential venues that would work.<br /><br />My first thought would be <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylands_Park">Skylands Park </a>in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankford_Township,_New_Jersey">Augusta</a>. It is home to the <a href="http://www.sussexskyhawks.com/">Sussex Skyhawks</a> of the <a href="http://www.canamleague.com/">Cam-Am League</a>. If you could get <a href="http://www.centurylink.com/">Century Link </a>and other sponsors on board, it would be the perfect venue.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYdI6_a_DnSYco0iBalOGYlSW1TKypTWndLFQ5lFJ2YCrvK-UWLd9cdu_BYxpPOQxnEKEj-ClJ6OGyD8BzPol_y_cOdk3DCVXIxEG-MjT2AKXJIGeNLW7LPM9K94ITRCE9sqgjGH3u4NA/s1600/SkylandsPark.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 206px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYdI6_a_DnSYco0iBalOGYlSW1TKypTWndLFQ5lFJ2YCrvK-UWLd9cdu_BYxpPOQxnEKEj-ClJ6OGyD8BzPol_y_cOdk3DCVXIxEG-MjT2AKXJIGeNLW7LPM9K94ITRCE9sqgjGH3u4NA/s320/SkylandsPark.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550899036437921714" /></a>If that doesn't work, I have heard the new owner of <a href="http://www.mountaincreek.com/">Mountain Creek</a>, Eugene Mulvihill, who has a <a href="http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/2010/05/eugene_mulvihill_sees_mountain.html">big vision for the resort</a>, could pull it off. </p><p>Then, get the <a href="http://www.newjerseydevils.com/">New Jersey Devils </a>involved in that Northwest corner that often goes ignored PR-wise (co-owner Jeff Vanderbeek did not stop here on <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=buccigross_john&id=5810373">his summer Jersey Tour</a>) and you may have something.</p><p>If not high school, make it college teams like <a href="http://www.goprincetontigers.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10600&SPID=4264&SPSID=46867">Princeton</a>, <a href="http://www.shupirates.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=12600&SPID=5525&SPSID=52960">Seton Hall</a>, <a href="http://wpuhockey.com/">William Paterson</a>, <a href="http://www.zonethemes.com/rutgershockey.com/DI/">Rutgers</a>, <a href="http://www.gomuhawks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=14300&ATCLID=722891">Monmouth</a>, <a href="http://www.rowanicehockey.com/index_home.html">Rowan</a>, <a href="http://tcnj.goalline.ca/">TCNJ</a> or <a href="http://www.ridericehockey.org/">Rider</a>. My father absolutely adored the man; and watching his show became something of a family ritual in our household that would only be rivaled years later by Fox Sunday Nights with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simpsons">The Simpsons</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Living_Color">In Living Color</a>.</div><div><br /></div><div>The years have passed, but when Uncle Floyd <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma1BnLv50QA">announced his run for New Jersey Governor</a>, my dad immediately emailed me from Arizona, where my parents live now, to make sure I considered him as a write-in vote.</div><div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjgVRTASUk6JKbY_b40cnbpAQgw7Pm2Dno4GNynFeOndPNPfQRjL1W4Q1IVswLMjbqE-AkkCfBoRU8Ew2cBxYpR9x-p5x_3ketWLOq07U-ySQgNPUNl0-oSFp5HF4klMSWk1TkkTywRWEI/s320/CaptainNoah.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjgVRTASUk6JKbY_b40cnbpAQgw7Pm2Dno4GNynFeOndPNPfQRjL1W4Q1IVswLMjbqE-AkkCfBoRU8Ew2cBxYpR9x-p5x_3ketWLOq07U-ySQgNPUNl0-oSFp5HF4klMSWk1TkkTywRWEI/s320/CaptainNoah.jpg" border="0" alt="" /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: none; "></span></a>Turning the <a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/Rabbit-ears_dipole_antenna_with_UHF_loop_20090204.jpg">rabbit ears</a> south, in the past, many kids in PA and South Jersey ritualistically turned their TV sets to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Noah_and_His_Magical_Ark">Captain Noah</a> on their local network affiliates.
